Quick note: exFAT last access times are also not write-proof in read-only mode.

exFAT last access times were modified despite both ro and noatime mount options. This did not happen before. Perhaps it has something to do with remounting. Also, it has not happened on FAT32 or FAT16 so far.

$ mount |grep USB2 /dev/sdi1 on /media/username/USB2 type fuseblk (ro,nosuid,nodev,noatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,blksize=4096,uhelper=udisks2) $ ls -l -u --full-time text.txt -rwx------ 1 username usergroup 135 2022-07-22 02:04:37.000000000 +0200 test.txt

(Previous last access date was 2022-07-18.)

Unbelievable. I can't even trust "noatime" anymore.
